 USTA 3.5 teammates Kaye Beth Pumphrey Vietti and Misty Brown play for Colonial, but they play to make friends as well as to win. So, after coming back from losing the first set, 6-0, to win a SuperTiebreak, they got their picture taken with the opposing coach, Gonzalo Nuñez.
Nuñez teaches tennis at Granbury's Pecan Plantation, which has produced some powerhouse teams. But powerhouse friendships are also what tennis is about, as thousands of longtime leaguers can attest.

Get to Know the Greater Fort Worth Tennis Coalition—It Represents Your Leagues |

 The Greater Fort Worth Tennis Coalition (GFWTC) participated in the recent USTA League captains meeting at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield. The GFWTC governs USTA leagues in the Greater Fort Worth area, so it would be a good idea for leaguers to familiarize themselves with its representatives.
Before the group got its new name last year, we wrote about its significance, especially with regard to starting this very website, TennisFortWorth.com.
Since then, the GFWTC has expanded to include representatives from the Keller Alliance Tennis Charter (Nancy King) and the Parker County Tennis Association (Marie Welsh).
When the GFWTC meets, its members have long, important discussions about league tennis, of course, but also about how to increase participation and put tennis within reach for more players. It discusses this website, TennisFortWorth.com—we attend its meetings from time to time—so we can improve our work here, too.

Southlake Tennis Center Hosts Popular Boot Camp |

 Stephen Poorman, the director of tennis at Southlake Tennis Center, reports that the facility recently held a fitness-focused boot camp. There were about 30 participants in the three hours of nonstop tennis, plus a TRX court, which Poorman described as “fitness on court with the cables.”
“The players can’t wait to do it again,” said Poorman, who ran the event with fellow STC pros Nathan Byrnes, Alejandro Chong, Clint Laukhuf, David McKinney, Jonathan Renwick, Saman Samii and Manuela Santos.

Roland Garros Took Flight Here In Fort Worth |

 Reading the paper during the Australian Open, I stumbled upon an aviation article about... Roland Garros. I realize the French Open with its red clay is still months away (May 26-June 9, 2013), but they're both Grand Slams.
So check out this piece about Garros, who was a World War I fighter pilot and led a heroic, if short, life--which brought him to Fort Worth for a big event back in 1911.
