TCU’s Millie Nichols Wins Cotton Bowl PDF Print E-mail
Written by TennisFortWorth.com Staff

Take a look at the semi-western grip Millie Nichols uses on her forehand, which we will get a good look at in the spring season, which starts Jan. 21. Nichols, of Austin, recently won the singles title at the Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. Sophomore Millie Nichols, who transferred from Tennessee last year to TCU, has given the Lady Frogs another great weapon, which many TCU fans discovered months ago. Her most recent large triumph came in the open draw of the Cotton Bowl Classic, in which she was the top seed and lost exactly one set in her five matches.

Since transferring, she has won ITA Summer Circuit singles titles in Plano and College Station, as well as the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships doubles title with Olivia Smith last fall. As partners, Nichols and Smith are ranked 31st in the nation entering the spring season, which starts Jan. 21, when Syracuse visits TCU.

“The tournament was a good challenge for me,” Nichols said of the Cotton Bowl. “I played some good/solid players. I did not know what to expect, because I had not played a tournament/match since the beginning of November. Fortunately, I played well, although some things did feel a little off. Playing this tournament has given me a lot of confidence as I move into the spring season.”

Mitch & Shane Sign with A&M; Korinek Chooses UT-Austin PDF Print E-mail
Written by TennisFortWorth.com Staff

Shane, Mitch and AndrewAledo’s Mitch Krueger and Keller’s Shane Vinsant, both blue-chip recruits sought after by universities near and far, have committed to Texas A&M. Before choosing, each told TennisFortWorth.com that he might sign at the same school but that that would not be the deciding factor.

Vinsant wound up committing first, followed a couple of weeks later by Krueger, who said it would be a bonus to get to play with Vinsant as Aggies teammates. Their incredible resumes include great success together in doubles, so A&M must be super-psyched to get those two guys.

Mansfield’s Andrew Korinek, current titleholder of the UIL Class 5A state championship, chose Texas. His family has close ties with UT-Austin and is a blue-chip recruit, too, so he should get solid support from the knowledgeable tennis crowds there. Walnut Creek Country Club director of tennis Ernie Abraham still remembers when Korinek’s mom used to push him around the tennis courts in a stroller, so this kid has been around tennis his entire life...and it shows.
